Common Dryer Problems We Fix

A dryer has fewer parts than a washer, but heat and lint are hard on them. These are the symptoms we’re called about most.

Dryer Runs but Doesn’t Heat

On electric dryers, a burnt-out heating element, a blown thermal fuse or a failed high-limit thermostat are the usual causes. A dryer that has overheated because of a blocked vent often blows the thermal fuse, so we check the venting as well as replacing the part.

Takes Too Long to Dry

Long drying times are most often an airflow problem: a packed lint screen, a crushed transition hose or a long vent run full of lint. A weak heating element or a faulty thermostat can also be involved.

Drum Won’t Turn

If the motor hums but the drum doesn’t move, the drive belt has probably snapped or slipped off. A seized idler pulley or worn drum rollers can also stop the drum.

Squealing, Thumping or Grinding

Squeals usually come from a worn idler pulley or drum rollers. Thumping can mean a flat spot on a roller or a damaged belt. Grinding often means worn drum glides or bearings.

Dryer Won’t Start

A faulty door switch, a blown thermal fuse, a broken start switch or a failed control board can each leave a dryer dead. Before calling, check the breaker; electric dryers use a double breaker that can trip on one side.

Dryer Shuts Off Early

A dryer that stops mid-cycle is often overheating and cutting out on its safety thermostat, or its moisture sensor bars are coated with fabric softener residue and ending the cycle too soon.

Burning Smell

Stop the dryer and unplug it. Lint near the heater or a belt rubbing on a seized roller can cause a burning smell. Have it checked before using it again.

Electric Dryers Only

We repair electric dryers, including stacked laundry pairs, compact 24-inch units and ventless condensing models, from the heating element and thermal fuse to the drum, belt, motor and control board. We don’t service gas appliances; for a gas range or dryer, contact a licensed gas technician.

If you smell gas near your dryer, don’t operate it or any switches. Leave the home and call your gas utility from outside.

Lint, Venting and Fire Safety

The U.S. National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that failing to clean the dryer is the leading factor in home dryer fires. Clean the lint screen before every load, and have the vent duct cleaned regularly. Condo dryers often vent through long ducts to an outside wall or a shared shaft, and those runs clog faster. Some condo units use ventless (condensing) dryers instead, which have a condenser or filter that needs regular cleaning.

Quick Checks Before Booking

  • Pull out the lint screen and clean it, then wash it with warm soapy water if it’s coated with dryer-sheet film.
  • Look behind the dryer for a crushed or kinked foil transition hose.
  • With the dryer running, go outside or to the vent outlet and feel for strong airflow.
  • Check the breaker panel. A half-tripped double breaker can let the drum turn with no heat.
  • Try a smaller load; overloaded drums dry slowly and wear the rollers faster.

Dryer Error Codes by Brand

Most digital dryers show a code when something goes wrong. The tables below list the codes we see most often, with meanings taken from each manufacturer’s support pages or owner’s manuals. Codes can vary by model, so confirm yours in the manual. Before checking anything inside the appliance, unplug it or switch off its breaker. If a code points to a leak, overheating or a burning smell, stop using it and call us at 647-642-1414.

Kenmore Dryer Codes

Kenmore dryers follow their maker’s codes: a 110 model number prefix means Whirlpool-built, 417 means Frigidaire-built and 796 means LG-built, so use those brands’ codes above.

† From an owner’s manual, a service manual or a parts supplier’s listing rather than the manufacturer’s support site; confirm in your manual. If a code keeps coming back after these checks, the part behind it usually needs replacing, so book a repair visit.

What a Customer Said

“Fantastic service. Called the day before to get an appointment, they showed up and fixed my dryer very quickly. Even cleaned the inside of the dryer. I will definitely use this service again.”

Repair or Replace Your Dryer?

Dryers are among the most repairable appliances in the home. Belts, rollers, idler pulleys, heating elements, thermal fuses and door switches are all moderate repairs, so even a 12- or 15-year-old dryer is often worth fixing. Replacement mostly makes sense when the drum is damaged, the motor and control board fail together, or the dryer is very old and the repair is expensive.

Cost and Warranty

Dryer visits start with a $70 service call for diagnosis, and that charge disappears once you approve the repair. Parts and labour carry a 3 to 6 month guarantee, set by the type of job. We take cash, credit, debit and Interac e-Transfer, and charge no premium for weekends or holidays.

Your Dryer Repair, Step by Step

  1. Call us or book a dryer repair online. Tell us the brand and model number if you have it.
  2. We give you an arrival window, frequently the same day.
  3. The technician tests the dryer, finds the fault and gives you the price.
  4. After the repair, we run a heated cycle to confirm it’s working.

Dryer Brands We Repair

We fix Whirlpool, Maytag, LG, Samsung, Frigidaire, Electrolux, GE, Bosch, Miele and Inglis electric dryers, along with older Kenmore models built by Whirlpool or LG.

Areas Served

Our technicians handle dryer calls across Toronto, North York, Scarborough and Etobicoke. Local tip: in winter, outside vent hoods can collect frost or get blocked by snow. If drying times jump suddenly in cold weather, check the outside vent flap opens freely when the dryer is running.

Dryer Repair FAQ

Why is my dryer running but not heating?

On an electric dryer, the most common causes are a burnt-out heating element, a blown thermal fuse or a failed thermostat. A blocked vent often causes the fuse to blow, so the vent should be checked too. Replacing the fuse without clearing the vent usually means it blows again within weeks.

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?

Clean the lint screen before every load, and have the vent duct checked and cleaned at least once a year. Clean it more often if you dry a lot of loads, have a long vent run, or notice drying times getting longer.

Do you repair gas dryers?

No. We work on electric dryers only and don’t service gas dryers or any gas appliance. For a gas dryer, please contact a licensed gas technician. If you ever notice a gas odour, leave right away, don’t use switches inside, and call your gas utility from outside.

Why does my dryer squeal?

Squealing usually means a worn idler pulley or drum rollers. They’re reasonably priced parts, and replacing them early stops wear spreading to the belt and motor. A squeal that starts only with heavy loads like towels or jeans is a classic sign of a worn idler pulley. Book before the belt snaps and the drum stops turning altogether.

Can a stacked condo dryer be repaired?

Yes. We regularly work on stacked and compact dryers in condo closets, including ventless condensing and heat-pump models. If your building requires an elevator booking for trades, mention it when you schedule. Most stacked dryer repairs are done in place or with the pair slid out a short distance.
