Common Refrigerator Problems We Fix

Most fridge breakdowns fall into a handful of patterns. Here is what each symptom usually means and which part is often behind it. Your technician confirms the cause before quoting.

Fridge Not Cooling, Freezer Still Cold

In most modern fridges, cold air is made in the freezer and blown into the fresh-food side. If the freezer is fine but the fridge is warm, the evaporator fan may have failed, the air damper may be stuck shut, or frost may be blocking the air channel. A defrost problem is a common root cause.

Fridge and Freezer Both Warm

When both sides warm up, we look at the condenser fan, dirty condenser coils, the start relay and the compressor. A clicking sound every few minutes with no cooling often points to a start relay or a compressor that won’t start.

Freezer Frosting Up

Thick frost on the back wall of the freezer usually means the automatic defrost isn’t working. The defrost heater, the defrost thermostat or the control board can each cause it. A worn door gasket that lets in warm, humid air makes frost build faster.

Ice Maker or Water Dispenser Not Working

No ice, slow ice or no water from the door is often a frozen fill tube, a failed water inlet valve, a clogged water filter or a faulty ice maker module. Low household water pressure can also be a factor.

Water Leaking Inside or Under the Fridge

Water under the crisper drawers usually means a blocked defrost drain. Water on the floor can come from a cracked drain pan, a loose water line to the ice maker or a leaking inlet valve.

Loud Buzzing, Clicking or Rattling

A noisy evaporator or condenser fan, ice hitting a fan blade, or a compressor straining under load each make a different sound. Describing the noise on the phone helps us bring the right fan motor.

Fridge Running Constantly

A fridge that never cycles off may have dirty condenser coils, a failing door seal, a faulty thermistor or low refrigerant from a leak. We check the simple causes first.

Types of Refrigerators We Service

We repair top-freezer, bottom-freezer, side-by-side and French-door refrigerators, plus upright and chest freezers and wine coolers. Many condo kitchens have counter-depth or panel-ready built-in units that sit tight between cabinets. Those take extra care to pull out without scratching floors or cabinetry, so tell us when you book if your fridge is built in. We also handle compact and apartment-size fridges.

Refrigerator Error Codes by Brand

Most digital refrigerators show a code when something goes wrong. The tables below list the codes we see most often, with meanings taken from each manufacturer’s support pages or owner’s manuals. Codes can vary by model, so confirm yours in the manual. Before checking anything inside the appliance, unplug it or switch off its breaker. If a code points to a leak, overheating or a burning smell, stop using it and call us at 647-642-1414.

Kenmore Refrigerator Codes

Kenmore fridges follow their maker’s codes and alerts: 106 means Whirlpool-built, 253 means Frigidaire-built and 795 means LG-built, so use those brands’ codes above.

Quick Checks Before You Call

  • Make sure the temperature dial or display wasn’t bumped to a warmer setting. Health Canada recommends 4°C or colder for the fridge and -18°C for the freezer.
  • Check that the fridge has power and the breaker hasn’t tripped.
  • Look for food or containers blocking the air vents inside the freezer and fridge.
  • Close the doors firmly and check that nothing is stopping the gasket from sealing.
  • Find the model number, usually on a label inside the fridge on a side wall or ceiling, so we can check parts before we arrive.

Repair or Replace Your Fridge?

A simple rule of thumb: if the fridge is under about 10 years old and the repair costs less than half the price of a comparable new unit, repairing usually makes sense. Fan motors, defrost parts, thermostats, door gaskets and inlet valves are typically worth fixing at almost any age. A failed sealed system (compressor or refrigerant leak) on an older, basic fridge is the most common case where replacing makes more sense. We’ll give you the repair price first so you can compare.

Cost and Warranty

The service call is $70 and covers diagnosis. If you approve the repair, that fee is waived. Your repair is covered by a warranty of 3 to 6 months depending on what we replace. There’s no extra charge for evenings, weekends or holidays. You can pay by cash, credit card, debit or Interac e-Transfer.

How a Fridge Repair Visit Works

  1. Call or request a visit online and describe the symptoms.
  2. We book a time window, often the same day.
  3. The technician diagnoses the fault and quotes the price before starting.
  4. We repair it, test that it’s cooling, and explain the warranty.

What a Customer Said

“I recently had my refrigerator break down due to a brown out which damaged the start capacitor relay. It’s a twenty two year old Frigidaire and I thought that I was going to have to replace it. But thanks to [our technician] my fridge is back up and running. He managed to find the part and had it repaired the next day. I am extremely happy with the service that I received and will recommend [them] to everyone I know that needs appliance repairs done. It’s nice to know that there is someone out there still doing quality work at a reasonable price.”

Refrigerator Brands We Repair

We fix every major fridge brand, including Frigidaire, GE (with Profile and Café models), Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Inglis, Samsung, LG and Bosch. Older Sears units are covered too: the Kenmore notes above explain how to tell who built yours.

Areas Served

We repair refrigerators in Toronto, North York, Scarborough and Etobicoke. A Toronto tip: in condos the fridge often sits in a tight alcove with little airflow, and the condenser coils clog with dust faster than you’d expect. Vacuuming the coils once or twice a year helps the compressor run less and last longer.

Refrigerator Repair FAQ

Why is my fridge not cooling when the freezer still works?

Usually because cold air from the freezer isn’t reaching the fridge. A failed evaporator fan, a stuck air damper or frost blocking the air duct are the common causes. These are typically repairable in one visit. Keep the doors closed meanwhile.

Is it worth repairing a 10-year-old fridge?

Often, yes. Fans, defrost parts, thermostats and gaskets are reasonably priced repairs at any age. If a 10-year-old basic fridge needs a compressor or sealed-system work, replacing it may make more sense. We give you the price first so you can decide.

How long does a fridge repair take?

Most repairs are done in one visit of about one to two hours, especially when we know the brand and symptoms in advance. If a part has to be ordered, we’ll tell you the expected timing. Sealed-system repairs take longer.

Should I unplug my fridge before you arrive?

Not usually. Leave it running so the technician can see the problem, unless it’s sparking, smoking or tripping the breaker. If the freezer has heavy frost, don’t chip at it, since that can puncture the cooling lines. Clear the top shelf too.

How long will my food stay safe?

Health Canada says an unopened fridge keeps food cold for about 4 hours, a full freezer stays frozen for about 48 hours and a half-full one for about 24 hours. Keep the doors closed, and move perishables to a cooler with ice if the repair will take longer.
