Common Washer Problems We Fix

These are the faults we see most often. The symptom points us to a short list of parts, and the technician confirms the actual cause on site.

Washer Won’t Drain

Water left in the drum after the cycle usually means a clogged drain pump filter, a blocked or kinked drain hose, or a failed drain pump. Coins, hair ties and small socks are frequent culprits. Many front-loaders have a small access panel at the bottom front for the pump filter.

Washer Won’t Spin

If clothes come out soaking wet, the washer may not have drained fully, the load may be unbalanced, or the lid switch, door lock, drive belt, motor coupling or motor control board may have failed.

Leaking Water

Front-loaders often leak from a torn door boot (the rubber gasket) or a clogged detergent dispenser. Top-loaders leak from loose hoses, a worn tub seal or a cracked pump. Note where the water appears; that helps us narrow it down.

Shaking, Banging or Walking Across the Floor

Violent shaking during spin usually comes from worn shock absorbers, suspension springs or dampers, or a washer that isn’t level. Loud grinding with a heavy load can mean the drum bearings are going.

Door Won’t Lock or Won’t Open

A front-loader won’t start until the door lock engages, and it stays locked while water is in the drum. A faulty lock assembly, a broken door strike or a drain problem can each leave the door stuck.

Washer Won’t Fill or Fills Slowly

Check that both taps behind the washer are fully open. If they are, the inlet screens may be clogged with sediment or the water inlet valve may have failed.

Musty Odour or Mould

Front-loaders seal tightly, so moisture and detergent residue can build up in the door boot and drum. We can replace a mouldy gasket and check that the washer drains fully, which is a common hidden cause of smells.

Types of Washers We Service

We repair front-load and top-load washers (with agitator or impeller), stacked washer-dryer pairs, all-in-one washer-dryer combos and compact 24-inch units. In Toronto condos, washers are usually stacked in a narrow laundry closet, so there’s little room to work. Our technicians are used to sliding stacked units out, separating them when needed and reinstalling them carefully.

Washer Error Codes by Brand

Most digital washers show a code when something goes wrong. The tables below list the codes we see most often, with meanings taken from each manufacturer’s support pages or owner’s manuals. Codes can vary by model, so confirm yours in the manual. Before checking anything inside the appliance, unplug it or switch off its breaker. If a code points to a leak, overheating or a burning smell, stop using it and call us at 647-642-1414.

Codes listed for Kenmore HE2 front-loaders:

† From an owner’s manual, a service manual or a parts supplier’s listing rather than the manufacturer’s support site; confirm in your manual. If a code keeps coming back after these checks, the part behind it usually needs replacing, so book a repair visit.

Things to Try First

  • Unplug the washer for one minute, then plug it back in. A brief reset clears some control glitches.
  • Open both water taps fully and check the fill hoses for kinks behind the machine.
  • Clean the drain pump filter if your model has one. Put down towels and a shallow pan first.
  • Rearrange a heavy, lopsided load, such as a single bath mat or a duvet, and try the spin again.
  • Write down any code on the display exactly as it appears.

Repair or Replace Your Washer?

Drain pumps, door locks, lid switches, inlet valves, belts and shock absorbers are usually worth repairing, even on a washer that’s 8 to 10 years old. Failed drum bearings on a front-loader are a bigger job because the tub often has to come apart, so on an older basic model replacement may be the better value. Before any work starts you get a firm price, which makes it easy to weigh against a new machine.

Cost and Warranty

You pay $70 for the visit and diagnosis, and we waive it when you approve the repair. Every washer repair is backed for 3 to 6 months, with the period set by the part replaced. Evening, weekend and holiday visits cost the same. Payment is by cash, credit, debit or Interac e-Transfer.

What Happens During a Washer Visit

  1. Book by phone or through our online booking page, and tell us whether there’s water in the drum.
  2. We confirm an arrival window, often for the same day.
  3. Your technician drains the washer if needed, finds the fault and quotes the repair.
  4. Once you approve, we repair it and run a test cycle before leaving.

What a Customer Said

“Amazing service and very friendly! Thanks for answering some questions and helping my family figure out the issue with our washer. He was very experienced and could tell what the issue was just from a picture of our washer and a part that was removed by another company.”

Washer Repair FAQ

Why is my front-load washer full of water?

Most often the drain pump filter is clogged or the drain pump has failed. Some washers also hold water when a cycle is interrupted. You can try cleaning the filter, keeping towels ready, or call us and we’ll drain it during the visit.

How do I stop my front-loader from smelling?

Leave the door and dispenser drawer open between loads so they dry out. Use a high-efficiency (HE) detergent in the right amount, wipe the door gasket weekly and run the cleaning cycle monthly. If the smell remains, the drain may not be clearing fully.

Is it worth fixing a washer that won’t spin?

Usually, yes. A no-spin problem is often a drain clog, door lock, lid switch or belt, which are moderate repairs. If the cause is a failed motor or bearings on an older washer, we’ll tell you if replacing makes more sense.

Can you repair stacked washers in a condo closet?

Yes. We regularly service stacked and compact units in condo laundry closets. Let us know when you book if the space is especially tight, or if your building needs an elevator booking for service visits. Clearing the floor in front of the closet helps us get started quickly.

Why does my washer shake so much?

Usually because the load is unbalanced or the washer isn’t level. If it still shakes with a balanced load, the shock absorbers, springs or suspension rods are likely worn and should be replaced before they damage other parts. Check the feet first.
